The Best Start-Up Guide to Audacity for Narrators

I am super excited to share this! My Book, yes MY Book is published and on Amazon as of today! <High Five>
Please check it out, if you like it, just give it a few hundred raving reviews!
Seriously, This guide was written specifically for Narrators, Voice-Over Talents and Podcasters to get started quickly using Audacity 2.1.2. I created this ebook because I was in the exact position you are in now, excited to get started but not sure how to get the best sound from my system. Even though you are recording right away and with great ease, there are several important things you need to know about editing and mastering your track and meeting the requirements of sites like ACX and LibriVox.

This ebook is a collection of important information scattered throughout the web that I spent days searching for and then figuring out what did and did not work in Audacity. This included convenient methods and shortcuts that I learned from countless videos and tutorials, filtered and focused on the needs of the Narrator that simplify the process. I hope you enjoy it!
Audacity is an excellent program used by many professionals. Do not feel like you are missing out because you didn’t pay hundreds of dollars. As a Narrator, Voice-Over talent or Podcaster, Audacity has everything you need to get started fast and become the success you were always meant to be.
I hope you enjoy it!

  1. Hi John, Love your book. It is extremely informative and very helpful to the those of us trying to learn Audacity. You say to contact you on your blog for questions, so here goes. In your "Measure Contrast" section, you say to get the "measure selection" volume, subtract from -22 and enter the resulting number in the "Amplification" section. My question is: what if your "measure selection" volume is more that -22? Say it is -22.3. What would you enter in the "Amplification" window? Would it be a +.3? Also, if you're mastering numerous chapters of a narrated book, do you record/save all your initial Mastering settings from your first chapter and use those same settings for all of the chapters in order to have a consistent recording level throughout or do you treat each chapter individually?

    1. Thank you I am so glad you enjoyed the book. You are correct, amplify to achieve -22 by amplifying to the difference, be it a + or - number, in your example +.3 is correct. Your second question is the tricky one. Depending on your recording environment, you may need to get your noise profile separately, but the reduction settings would stay the same. Equalization, Normalize and compression will always be the same once you find the settings you like according to your equipment, so you can create chains and apply them to the whole file (all chapters)However, all files or chapters should be measured and amplified separately to have a consistent volume throughout the book. I hope this helps, please feel free to ask anytime. Good Luck!

  2. Man, was I lucky! Ran into the book by luck just as I was to start engineering my audiobook. Clear, succinct, nitty gritty info. Thanks!
